Why should gift integrations target cart lines rather than product titles?

Use the current cart’s line identity to target the intended gift; product titles and remembered line keys are unsafe shortcuts when paid and promotional quantities coexist.

A cart line is a particular entry in the cart, not merely a product name. A customer may buy a product that is also used as a promotional gift. The integration must distinguish the intended reward from purchased merchandise before changing quantity or reversing a promotion.

What does Shopify document about cart identity?

Shopify’s Cart API explains that one variant can appear on multiple cart lines and recommends line-item keys for targeting the intended line. (Cart API referenceSkip to main content) A title is a display label, so using it as the sole identifier can hide differences in variant, properties, purchase arrangement or discount treatment. Inspect the current cart rather than inferring identity from the drawer’s visual order.

Shopify also documents that a line-item key can change when characteristics such as properties or discount applications change. (Cart API referenceSkip to main content) Review Shopify’s discount-combination guidance when a promotion change affects pricing. A previously observed key should not be treated as a permanent identifier across every subsequent mutation.

Which cart cases should a developer prepare?

CaseIdentity questionExpected protection
Paid item matches gift variantWhich line is the earned reward?Preserve the purchased item
Two option combinations share a titleWhich variant was selected?Avoid removing the wrong size
Properties are updatedHas the line identity changed?Read current state again
Another discount appliesHas the line been repriced or split?Reevaluate the intended target
A line is removedAre stored positions stale?Avoid editing the next item by accident

These are inspection requirements, not a claim that every case produces separate lines. The actual cart response should decide how the current state is represented.

How should Monk identification attributes be handled?

Monk Commerce documents offer-identification attributes that are separate from Shopify’s line keys. Monk Commerce’s identification guide describes an mr1 attribute that can appear alongside a discounted product in the cart, used for offer identification and analytics. (How to identify Monk orders in Shopify? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) The presence of such a marker can help explain why a promotional line carries app-related properties, but it is not a substitute for the current Shopify line identity when issuing a cart mutation.

Keep those properties intact while investigating a paid duplicate or gift reversal unless Monk’s supported integration explicitly requires a change. Ask the implementation owner to distinguish the app’s attribution marker, Shopify’s current line key and the selected variant. Do not assume that removing an unfamiliar attribute is a safe way to merge lines or repair a reward.

What should the mutation sequence use?

Start with a current cart read, identify the intended line using the provider-supported integration, perform the bounded change and inspect the returned state. Do not prescribe custom identifiers that conflict with an app’s own offer tracking.

If the required line cannot be distinguished safely, stop the custom mutation and resolve the model with the app or cart provider. Deleting all items with the same variant can appear to fix a duplicate reward while silently removing something the customer wanted to buy.

How should the result be reviewed?

Inspect quantity, variant and discount information after the action, then continue through the supported checkout path. Repeat after another promotion is applied and after the shopper changes a product option.

Keep a sanitized cart snapshot with the smallest reproduction. Remove tokens, customer details and unrelated attributes before sharing the evidence. The report should identify which line was intended, which line changed and which visible message became inconsistent.

Limits of this guide

This is a documentation-based integration checklist, not production-ready code or proof of an app defect. No merchant cart or app-specific line mapping was inspected. Exact line representation, supported identifiers and mutation recovery need validation in the intended implementation.
