Is a gift campaign link the same as a prefilled cart link?

Treat a gift campaign link and a prefilled cart link as different tools: one can establish offer context while another supplies merchandise, and neither alone proves a valid free-gift order.

A link can carry a campaign condition, preload merchandise or select a destination. Those are separate jobs. Before sharing a link, identify which job it performs and which conditions still need to be met after the shopper arrives.

Monk Commerce documents links within its gift-offer workflow. Monk Commerce documents shareable gift links that apply configured code context for eligible cart or checkout offers, with checkout placement described as Shopify Plus-specific. Shopify documents cart permalinks that preload merchandise into cart or checkout and labels that permalink format as legacy in favor of its newer Cart and Checkout Permalinks. (Create cart permalinksSkip to main content) Existing implementations may still use the older format. Use the current official guidance for new development rather than assuming every URL pattern copied from an older article is the recommended starting point.

How should the two approaches be compared?

Link purposeWhat it may supplyWhat remains to verify
Gift campaign contextConfigured offer code or eligibility contextQualifying purchase and reward
Prefilled merchandiseSpecific variants and quantitiesPrice and gift entitlement
Cart landing routeOpportunity to review the cartSelector and discount completion
Checkout landing routeShorter path to paymentSupported insertion and selection stage

Do not add a reward SKU to a URL and call the result a free gift until the discount and eligibility have been verified. A product can be present in the checkout while remaining fully paid.

Open the link in an empty test session and in a session with existing merchandise. Check the actual destination, item quantities, campaign context and required next action. Then remove the qualifying purchase and inspect whether the reward remains valid.

Try the same link after the offer is intentionally inactive in a test configuration. The landing page should not continue promising an unavailable reward. Keep the campaign’s customer-facing message consistent with the behavior the provider supports.

Choose the link that supports the desired customer task. A merchandise-specific campaign may benefit from a prefilled purchase, while a broad gift promotion may need shoppers to browse and qualify. A selection-based gift may require a cart step where choices can be completed.

Ask the app or integration owner to explain what happens to existing cart contents and discount context. Do not infer preservation or replacement from the URL’s appearance. Keep the approved link, destination, campaign conditions and retirement plan in the operating record so future staff know what is safe to reuse.

Limits of this guide

No campaign was sent and no merchant permalink was generated or tested. Current permalink capabilities, app link behavior and plan restrictions require implementation-specific review. The guide distinguishes documented concepts; it does not guarantee that combining two link mechanisms produces a supported gift journey.
