Why is an automatically added gift still showing a price?

A gift being present does not prove that it is discounted: inspect eligibility, the applied discount and the current cart before changing the product’s catalog price.

Do not immediately set the gift product’s catalog price to zero. First determine whether the item is an earned promotional reward, a formerly eligible reward that became paid, or an ordinary purchased unit of the same product. Those states can look similar in a cart drawer but require different responses.

Which documented behavior could explain the price?

Monk Commerce documents a paid fallback for one removal configuration. Monk Commerce’s removal guide explains that disabling automatic removal can leave a formerly eligible gift in the cart at full price after eligibility is lost. (How does the 'Auto remove' setting work in Free Gift offers? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) Confirm the actual offer setting and the shopper’s sequence before attributing the symptom to that behavior.

Shopify’s automatic-discount guidance separates having the required items in the cart from applying an eligible discount. (Shopify Help Center | Automatic discounts) Presence and pricing are therefore separate checks. Use the Shopify Cart API reference to inspect current line and price information when a developer needs to distinguish the cart state from a stale display.

How should the symptom be classified?

ObservationFirst questionNext evidence
Gift inserted at a normal priceDid the cart qualify for the discount?Rule inputs and price allocation
Gift was free, then became paidWhich qualifying condition changed?Before-and-after cart
Drawer says paid, checkout says freeIs the drawer stale?Current cart and refresh behavior
One paid and one free unitIs a purchased duplicate present?Variant and line identity
Gift absent entirelyWas insertion triggered?Entry route and mutation sequence

Avoid mixing an absent item and a priced item into the same bug report. One concerns insertion; the other concerns discounting or representation.

What should be checked before changing the offer?

Reproduce with the same qualifying products, quantity, code, currency and customer context. Inspect whether another promotion changed the qualifying amount or discount eligibility. Then repeat without unrelated changes in a safe test configuration.

If the intended policy removes unearned rewards, verify the supported removal setting and display update. If the policy deliberately leaves a paid item, make sure the customer can understand and remove it. Do not allow celebratory free-gift wording to remain beside an ordinary charge.

Why is changing the catalog price a different decision?

A catalog price applies beyond a single earned reward unless other controls deliberately restrict that product. Changing it can conceal the failing promotion rule while altering normal purchase behavior. Resolve the eligibility and discount model first; use a zero-price product only when it is part of an explicitly designed and validated offer.

After correction, test qualification, loss of eligibility and a paid purchase of the same item. Finish at checkout and inspect the result that the customer will actually be asked to pay.

Limits of this guide

No merchant cart, product price or app configuration was changed. The documented paid fallback is specific to the described Monk setting, not every gift app. Exact discount allocation, combination behavior and display timing require controlled store-specific validation.
