How should gift labels be checked between the cart and the order?

Treat a “free gift” label as a message to verify: compare the actual line, quantity and charged amount through cart, checkout and order before relying on the label operationally.

A message saying “free gift” can be correct, stale or applied to the wrong item. Use it as a cue to inspect the underlying purchase outcome. The customer, support team and fulfillment team need a shared understanding of which variant was included and what the customer paid for it.

Which Monk display and order markers are useful to check?

Monk Commerce documents both gift-display choices and offer-identification attributes. Monk Commerce’s selection guide describes a Display free label setting that shows FREE in the gift widget; with that setting disabled, it displays a zero price and a crossed-out original price. (How to give customers an option to choose their free gift? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) Monk’s identification guide describes an mrOrder ID in Shopify order Additional details for tracking, attribution and analytics, and says removing it prevents in-app analytics from working. (How to identify Monk orders in Shopify? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) These serve different purposes: the widget label communicates the offer to the shopper, while the order identifier supports attribution inside the app.

Compare the chosen variant and charged amount in the completed order even when the widget displayed FREE. Preserve Monk’s identification attributes during the review; its guide warns that removing the order identifier breaks in-app analytics. Neither a display label nor an attribution marker alone proves that the intended gift quantity was discounted or sent to fulfillment.

Which records should be compared?

Shopify’s Cart API exposes item and discount information that developers can inspect separately from custom cart wording. (Cart API referenceSkip to main content) Shopify’s fulfillment guidance describes reviewing and fulfilling order items through the order workflow. (Shopify Help Center | Fulfilling orders) The move from a promotional interface to an order record is therefore a useful review boundary. A custom banner should not be treated as an independent instruction to pack merchandise that is missing from the order.

Do not infer that every app uses the same promotion label or stores its metadata in the same place. Ask the provider how its supported workflow represents the reward and which record the operational team should rely on.

What should the consistency check include?

SurfaceWhat to verifyAmbiguity to catch
Offer messageCorrect promise and required actionCelebrating an unselected gift
Cart lineProduct, options and quantitySimilar titles hiding a variant change
CheckoutActual charged amountA paid fallback still called free
OrderIntended purchased and reward unitsOne label covering mixed quantities
Fulfillment handoffThe item record staff will followPacking from a banner screenshot

The acceptance result should name the expected item and price. Avoid passing a case merely because a particular word appears somewhere in the interface.

How should paid duplicates be described?

Suppose the buyer purchases one unit of a product and earns another unit as a reward. The interface should help the buyer understand the total quantity and discount rather than implying that every unit is free. Check the actual representation instead of assuming the app must split the units into a particular visual layout.

If the shopper loses eligibility and the reward becomes paid by design, verify the message changes accordingly. Support should be able to explain the order from the recorded facts without reconstructing an obsolete banner or guessing which quantity was promotional.

What should operators retain after a test order?

Keep the approved campaign specification, sanitized cart evidence and the relevant order-line outcome. Identify any warehouse mapping or packing rule that needs separate confirmation. Do not claim a gift was delivered merely because it appears in a test order.

When a discrepancy is found, assign it to the appropriate owner: promotion wording, cart rendering, discount configuration, order representation or fulfillment mapping. Correcting the label is appropriate only when the underlying entitlement and charged amount are already correct; otherwise it can hide the real defect.

Limits of this guide

No test order, warehouse integration or customer shipment was created. This article does not establish a universal label, order metadata field or fulfillment rule for gift apps. Operational records and the meaning of their fields need validation in the merchant’s own workflow.
