Why can a gift widget disappear after publishing a new Shopify theme?

After a theme change, check app activation and supported widget placement first, then distinguish a missing interface from a missing reward rule and retest the actual cart journey.

A new theme can change the interface in which an existing promotion runs. Start by identifying what disappeared: the promotional banner, gift selector, gift line or final discount. A missing widget is not automatically evidence that the commercial rule has been deleted.

What documented theme dependencies should be checked?

Shopify states that apps need to be reactivated in a newly published theme and describes app blocks, app embeds and custom theme-code integrations. (Shopify Help Center | Extend your theme with apps) This is a concrete reason to review the new theme’s integration settings instead of relying on the previous theme’s successful installation.

Monk Commerce also documents display refresh considerations. Monk Commerce’s automatic-gift guide describes a cart listener or automatic refresh as relevant to updating the visible cart after a gift change. (How to automatically add a free gift with purchase to a customer's cart? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) Check those only after confirming which cart implementation is actually in use. A listener copied for an older theme should not be assumed to fit a replacement drawer without review.

How should the new theme be compared with the previous one?

LayerWhat to inspectWhat not to assume
App activationRequired embed enabled for this themeInstalled app means active integration
PlacementSupported block or widget locationSame template structure as before
Reward ruleOffer remains configured as intendedMissing banner means deleted rule
Cart behaviorAdd/remove and visible updatesOld listener still fits
Checkout resultCorrect item, variant and discountInterface alone proves success

Use the same known cart in both theme configurations when an approved comparison environment is available. Record exactly which layer differs.

What should be included in a theme-release check?

Open a product page, use any quick-add path, qualify through the drawer and inspect the full cart. For selection offers, choose a gift and change the variant. Then reduce eligibility and inspect checkout. Test on the intended mobile layout as well as desktop.

Keep screenshots of the relevant integration settings and observed result. Do not scatter undocumented code edits across the new theme simply to make the banner appear. Ask the app or theme owner for the supported placement and update mechanism.

How should a rollback decision be made?

Define the critical customer promise before release: for example, eligible purchases must receive a correctly priced gift on supported routes. If that promise cannot be met, the authorized store owner should decide whether to restore the previous theme, pause the promotion or revise the journey.

A small visual difference can be acceptable while a missing earned gift is not. Classify the effect using customer outcome and recoverability, not merely how easy a screenshot is to reproduce. After a fix, repeat the whole earning-and-removal journey rather than checking the widget in isolation.

Limits of this guide

No theme was published, rolled back or edited for this research. Exact activation, block support and listener requirements depend on the installed app and theme. The checklist does not authorize live changes or establish that a particular app fails after a theme update.
