Should a gift threshold use the subtotal before or after discounts?
Write the exact qualifying-spend formula before choosing a threshold setting; the displayed cart total, native discount minimum and app rule must not be assumed to be the same amount.
A threshold such as “spend 100” is incomplete until the qualifying amount is defined. It could mean selected merchandise at its original price, a discounted merchandise subtotal or a narrower set of eligible items. Choose and communicate the formula, then confirm which amount the implementation actually evaluates.
How does Monk handle a discount code entered at checkout?
For Monk Commerce, the documented result depends on where the offer runs. For a Monk product-page or cart offer, its guide says a Shopify code applied later at checkout does not trigger automatic gift removal and the offer uses the pre-code cart value for threshold eligibility. (What happens to a free product when a discount code makes the cart value fall below threshold? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) For a Monk checkout offer, the same guide describes reevaluating eligibility after a code is applied, with the gift outcome depending on the automatic-removal setting. (What happens to a free product when a discount code makes the cart value fall below threshold? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell)
Use that placement distinction in the evaluation: qualify for the gift, enter a code that reduces the amount below the threshold, and inspect the gift and its price. Confirm the store plan, offer location, removal policy and discount-combination settings together. The documented pre-code behavior for a product/cart offer should not be mistaken for a universal subtotal formula for every Monk configuration.
What does Shopify document for native minimum spend?
For native Buy X Get Y minimum spend, Shopify excludes shipping and taxes and counts only the selected Customer buys products; its documentation also explains how already product-discounted items can be excluded when discounts combine. (Shopify Help Center | Buy X get Y discounts) This is a specific native-discount rule. Do not generalize it into a promise about every app’s threshold field or every combination of promotions.
Shopify’s discount combination guidance should be reviewed alongside the chosen rule. Separate an order discount from a product discount in the test record; changing the class can change the question being tested. The Ajax Cart API exposes cart monetary fields and the customer’s presentment currency. (Cart API referenceSkip to main content) A cart field is evidence of the cart state, not proof that an app uses that field for eligibility.
Which numerical cases expose an ambiguous formula?
Use an illustrative threshold of 100 in the store’s chosen currency. These numbers are a test example, not recommended commercial terms.
| Merchandise case | Question to resolve | Evidence to save |
|---|---|---|
| 105 before a product discount | Does that discounted line still count? | Line-level prices and rule class |
| 105 before an order discount | Which subtotal does the rule evaluate? | Order-level allocation and reward |
| 90 goods plus 15 shipping | Is shipping incorrectly counted? | Qualifying merchandise separately |
| 80 eligible plus 30 excluded goods | Is the whole cart being used? | Eligible-item set |
| Exactly 100 | Is the boundary inclusive? | Rule operator and resulting gift |
Do not approve the configuration from the first row alone. A formula can appear correct for ordinary carts while failing whenever merchandise has another discount.
How should a merchant compare app threshold settings?
Ask each provider to explain the setting using the same sample cart. Request a worked calculation with the relevant product set, price basis, discount classes and currency. A label such as “cart value” is not specific enough to settle those choices.
Record the provider’s answer as a scoped implementation statement and then test it. If the interface does not expose the chosen formula, ask for a supported configuration rather than adding theme code that merely changes the progress-bar number.
What should the customer-facing message say?
Keep the promise consistent with the calculation. If excluded products do not earn the gift, explain that where the customer acts on the promotion. If discounts change the qualifying amount, avoid a message that celebrates an earned gift based on an unrelated total.
Check the message again after applying and removing another promotion. The cart, reward and wording should converge on the same outcome. A stale progress message should be investigated separately from the eligibility calculation.
Limits of this guide
No app’s subtotal calculation was tested. Platform rules and combinations can change, and unusual product types need additional review. The numerical table is an editorial diagnostic exercise, not a prediction of an unspecified app or an approved pricing policy.

- How should excluded products affect a Shopify gift offer?
Define exclusions as part of the qualifying-product set, then test eligible-only, excluded-only and mixed carts; hiding a banner does not establish that excluded products stop earning rewards.
- How should you resolve two gift offers that qualify at the same time?
Choose a deliberate policy for overlapping offers—cumulative rewards, highest tier, or a named priority—then test qualification and reversal without assuming that all eligible offers should run.
- Should free shipping and a free gift share the same cart goal?
Use one combined goal only when both rewards truly share the same qualifying rule; otherwise show separate milestones and verify the shipping and gift outcomes independently.
