Should free shipping and a free gift share the same cart goal?
Use one combined goal only when both rewards truly share the same qualifying rule; otherwise show separate milestones and verify the shipping and gift outcomes independently.
A gift reward and free shipping can be promoted together without being earned in the same way. Before sharing one progress message, compare the merchandise set, customer conditions, currency and checkout requirements for both benefits. If those differ, a single “goal reached” message can overstate the result.
Why should reward logic and progress display be separated?
Monk Commerce documents offer combinations as a configuration topic. Monk Commerce’s same-type offer guide states that only one cart progress bar is displayed in a session and describes conditions for combining offers. (How to combine offers of the same type in Monk ? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) This makes it especially important to decide what the visible progress indicator represents. The display of one bar should not be interpreted as proof that only one reward exists, or that two rewards use the same calculation.
Shopify distinguishes shipping, product and order discounts in its discount-combination rules. (Shopify Help Center | Combining discounts) The distinction is useful when reviewing a campaign: successfully discounting a gift product does not establish that the shipping requirement has been met.
How should a dual-reward offer be specified?
Consider an invented campaign with a gift at 80 and free shipping at 120. The following cases help define the promise; they are not app defaults.
| Purchase state | Gift question | Shipping question |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible spend of 85 | Is the gift earned? | Is the next goal still explained? |
| Eligible spend of 125 | Does the gift remain correct? | Does the destination qualify? |
| Another discount applied | Does gift eligibility change? | Does the shipping condition change? |
| Excluded item added | Does it earn the reward? | Does it contribute to the other goal? |
| Delivery information changes | Is the gift still valid? | Is free shipping still available? |
Keep the actual offer conditions with the table. Avoid using the cart subtotal as a proxy for a destination-specific result that has not yet been evaluated.
What should the message display after the first milestone?
Explain the reward already earned and the next available action separately. The customer should be able to distinguish “gift added” from “free shipping earned.” Do not imply a shipping price before the relevant destination and method are known.
If one bar cannot express both rules accurately, prefer a simpler message or two clearly defined states. The goal is an understandable purchase decision, not maximum visual density. Ask the app provider which states the supported widget can represent before commissioning custom display logic.
How should the combined promotion be evaluated?
Verify gift lines and prices in the cart, then inspect the delivery method and shipping charge at checkout. Repeat after changing quantities, codes and address context in a safe test flow. Save the final order evidence if a test order is appropriate.
Compare candidate apps on whether their documented controls can express your policy and whether the resulting messages stay accurate. Do not infer a universal compatibility advantage from the presence of a progress-bar feature.
Limits of this guide
No shipping rule, destination, checkout combination or installed widget was tested. Shipping eligibility depends on the store’s actual configuration. The proposed milestone examples are editorial requirements; they are not guarantees that any reviewed product supports the exact combined display.

- How should excluded products affect a Shopify gift offer?
Define exclusions as part of the qualifying-product set, then test eligible-only, excluded-only and mixed carts; hiding a banner does not establish that excluded products stop earning rewards.
- How should you resolve two gift offers that qualify at the same time?
Choose a deliberate policy for overlapping offers—cumulative rewards, highest tier, or a named priority—then test qualification and reversal without assuming that all eligible offers should run.
- Should a gift threshold use the subtotal before or after discounts?
Write the exact qualifying-spend formula before choosing a threshold setting; the displayed cart total, native discount minimum and app rule must not be assumed to be the same amount.
