How should you resolve two gift offers that qualify at the same time?
Choose a deliberate policy for overlapping offers—cumulative rewards, highest tier, or a named priority—then test qualification and reversal without assuming that all eligible offers should run.
Overlapping offers are not necessarily a defect. The defect is leaving their combined result undefined. Decide whether the customer earns every applicable reward, one highest-tier reward, or the reward selected by an explicit priority rule before changing app settings.
What documented examples show why precedence matters?
Monk Commerce explains offer priority in its automatic-gift setup. Monk Commerce’s automatic-gift FAQ says that, without the relevant combination setup, the higher-positioned qualifying automatic-gift offer is applicable. (How to automatically add a free gift with purchase to a customer's cart? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) Monk’s combination guide distinguishes same-type cart offers from product-page offers and requires combination settings on both overlapping cart offers. (How to combine offers of the same type in Monk ? | Helpdesk - Monk Free Gift & Upsell) BOGOS describes tier configurations that either accumulate gifts or reward only the highest tier. (Tiered Gift With Purchase | BOGOS - Best Free Gift, Bundle & Upsell Shopify App) These are different documented control models. Do not assume that a dashboard order in one app maps directly to a tier setting in another.
Keep product-page and cart behavior distinct in the evaluation. Two widgets visible in different places may represent different stages of one journey rather than two rewards the shopper should receive.
Which policy should the merchant write down?
| Policy | Example intended result | Important reversal case |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative | Keep the first gift and earn a second | Lose only the reward no longer earned |
| Highest tier only | Replace the lower reward with the higher one | Restore or reselect the lower reward |
| Named campaign priority | One campaign takes precedence | Reevaluate when its condition fails |
| Mutually exclusive audience | Different groups see different rewards | Identity changes do not duplicate gifts |
These are alternative editorial designs, not universal app settings. Choose one per overlap rather than expecting the system to infer the merchant’s commercial intent.
How should the overlap be tested?
Start below both conditions. Qualify for the first offer, then the second, then remove enough qualifying merchandise to lose the second. Inspect gift quantities, variants and discounts after each step. Finish by losing both conditions.
Repeat the journey with an existing chosen gift when selection is involved. Define whether an existing choice should remain, be replaced or require a new choice. A successful upgrade alone does not establish correct downgrade handling.
How should changes to campaign priority be controlled?
Treat priority as part of the promotion specification. Save the intended order, combination choices and example carts before editing a live campaign. Make one change at a time in a test configuration so a later discrepancy can be attributed to a particular rule.
Ask the campaign owner to explain the outcome in plain language without referring only to a setting name. If operators cannot predict which gift a known cart should receive, the offer is not ready for a broader launch. Simplify the overlap or resolve the ambiguity with the provider first.
Limits of this guide
No installed priority rule, downgrade transition or customer-identity interaction was tested. Sources document particular vendor workflows, not common defaults across all products. Current package, placement and combination restrictions require store-specific confirmation; no performance ranking is assigned.

More research on eligibility boundaries
- How should excluded products affect a Shopify gift offer?
Define exclusions as part of the qualifying-product set, then test eligible-only, excluded-only and mixed carts; hiding a banner does not establish that excluded products stop earning rewards.
- Should a gift threshold use the subtotal before or after discounts?
Write the exact qualifying-spend formula before choosing a threshold setting; the displayed cart total, native discount minimum and app rule must not be assumed to be the same amount.
- Should free shipping and a free gift share the same cart goal?
Use one combined goal only when both rewards truly share the same qualifying rule; otherwise show separate milestones and verify the shipping and gift outcomes independently.
